Funk Commission - Chaired by the Undersecretary of Funk

Jazzy horns and groove ... quite the stimulus package. The Funk Commission returns to the HoDo Lounge for a night of uptempo contemporary jazz/funk ... too hot for C-Span! Come out and hear their report to the Council on Funky Relations. 8 p.m., no cover, 21+.

Agent Biscuit - Heavens, They're Tasty and Expeditious

If you can believe anything on MySpace (and why shouldn't you?), then the self description of jazz/fusion outfit Agent Biscuit from their own MySpace presence should lead you to the conclusion that this is a no-nonsense group of fellows:

"Agent Biscuit started when a few guys in Fargo wanted to make music together. Yay."

A lack of auspiciousness doesn't keep this trio from coaxing wry and cogent improvisations out of a simple keys/bass/drums setup a la Medeski, Martin and Wood. And that "yay" at the end of their "about" statement signifies, what? We can only assume it means that any resemblance to the controlled chaos they exhibit could, at any point, shift to uncontrolled chaos. Better come down to the HoDo Lounge, downtown, and see the sounds for yourself. No cover, 21+, 8:30 p.m.

Validating String Theory - The Inside Out String Trio

Moorhead's own Inside Out String Trio has been playing their refreshing juxtaposition of jazz, bluegrass and rock sensibility for right around a year. Invoking David Grisman and other pioneers of progressive bluegrass music, they offer a sound that is both musically challenging and fun for the ear.

We appreciate such musical odysseys here at the HoDo and are happy to have them stop by the Lounge tomorrow night at 8:30. Don't miss 'em. No cover, 21+

Noggin' Bobbin' with the John Thomas Trio

It means something when a band can elicit a variety of responses. The John Thomas Trio (listen here on MySpace) does that. There's a toe-tapping, head-bobbing thing going on, and there's a "how'd they do that?" thing going on too. It's provocative modern jazz pushed to the hilt; think Medeski, Martin and Wood simmering in the theatric fingerings of Trey Anastasio and the drama of Ennio Morricone. You are urged to respond.

The JTT will settle in tomorrow for a set in the HoDo Lounge at 8:30 p.m., 21+, no cover.

Springtime is for Jazz Lovers, pt. 2

Last week, as we all prepared ourselves for the weekend, I posted a pretty tulip photo and made comments about the first legitimate weekend of spring. That Sunday, we got buried in snow. As I post this time around, we're under a winter weather watch and we might receive another half foot of snow. Am I tempting fate with photos of tulips? Maybe.

Whatever the case may be, know this: spring will come and is coming. Celebrate it. Get out and see the Simon Rowe Trio tomorrow, Friday, April 11th. The all-ages show starts at 9 p.m. and there is a $7.50 cover.

Springtime is for Jazz Lovers

This might just be the first legitimate weekend that we can call spring. While the brown ground might not look as dashing as this tulip, it's still nice to feel the sunshine.

What a perfect reason to come out and celebrate. The Simon Rowe Trio will resume its residency tonight at 9 p.m. and will bring along a couple Usual Suspects, Tom Strait and Matt Patnode. There's a $7.50 cover for this all ages show.

Celebrate spring!
